Anyways I did the demo tutorial, and I can say that it is a great program so far.
You know what's interesting? This morning, I went to the bookstore and found a book on game maker which came up in a discussion recently and, I found a book on google's adaption of the scratch language .... To make a long story short, I didn't get the books because I am so busy and can not afford to get side trcked but since this new discovery of yours is flash related, it is automatically very interesting to me because that is exactly what I need.
There goes another two hour of sleep night. Thanks! Lol
Just checked this out - competition is good for us all.
Haven't downloaded the software yet because way too busy today, but some of the games the stencyl community have created look decent. My faves include Robichai, the Binging Force (nice looking Nintendoesque) and another new game call ICE. The later you play an icecube that has to navigate through various levels without being sawed up. Whats impressive about the later Game is the owner says he built it in about an hour!!! I can imagine this addictive little game doing well on the App store. They are also trying other things and there's a decent RPG demo in developement too.
The biggest problem I can see at the moment is lack of activity because up until now everything has been locked down in Alpha/Beta. For example in May on Stencyl there was only 16 Games in the "Announce your Game" section! Also a lot of the demo links don't seem to work or have since been removed. I imagine the forums will now get busier and also as and when the iPhone publishing option becomes available. They have also teamed up with Kongregate which should help populate the forums.
And there goes my biggest concern. I'm not sure how quickly stencyl will be able to get this iOS exporter service available, especially with the software working on a windows PC. The Roadmap says Summer (but in the Blog it says later this year) if this was to slip or be cancelled then a lot of devs would be peeved off. Also there is little information about what Financial backing they have.
I think Stencyl has potential and if you want to create Flash games now for websites then it is definitely worth keeping an eye on it. For me, I'll download the software later this week when I get a chance and take it for a spin. But I won't be planning any iOS games for it anytime soon.
......................ps Project Masala is still coming.................
Given that it runs to flash I wonder if when the IOS exporter arrives it will run as similar speeds to to flash conversions to IOS or will it be smarter/quicker? The poll above seems to be running about 75% to try it out, so it will be interesting to see what happens. And I have not seen the pricing structure or how they see their economic model. Perhaps they will earn from there affiliate program from sites they push users to, and be charging when the IOS arrives for the export.
I can see that there will be those that head off to try to turn a buck with flash games, but I doubt that most will do any better than on IOS, but for the few that are really going for it cross platform it may well be a useful tool as Flash will be welcome as it is the format of choice for many online. My guess is that HTML5 will shortly become a real game format online and contend with Flash (I am not sure how it will play out but it will allow the World to play games online through IOS devices), and I think that GS will be offering it pretty soon as I guess that it is what Marsala is about. So all in all interesting, but for the moment it doubles up development, and that is time.
I mean, the only thing that looks amazing to me is the loading times. Also the fact that you can save functions and have them able to be applied to any "actor"
But I still have to check what it has to offer. Can I use mochiads? Can i link to other sites? How easy would it be to navigate around the program? Does it require stencyls splash screen? and much much more.
I really don't want to use anything other than GS so let's hope this lights a bit of a fire under them to get web export upgraded to something that can be played on PCs.

They use Wordpress for their website, and it's not optimized. I can't stand navigating it. Takes 2 minutes every time you click a link.
I don't see this taking over GameSalad, but who knows. I've been developing various things in Flash for 10 years, and hated every second of it. I'm one of those people that just doesn't like Flash, and never did. I was glad when all the rumors were floating around about it going away because Apple has no plans on using it because it's the #1 reason for Mac crashes, and that HTML5 was going to kill it. But it keeps coming up for air. I know this program isn't Flash, but that's what it does, makes .swf files. And i wonder what the conversion is going to be with iOS export. HTML5, or something else…
I'm not interested in it, myself. Hope it works out for anybody that's going to give it a try.
This offer may be a little to hard to pass. Because I did something like this that is called star logo TNG. It is the same thing and the same way of making games. I want to vote GameSalad till I die but this might be good to make stuff for advertising my apps on the apps store.

I know that the appstore is where the money's at, but I really believe that making games that can be played on the web (especially through facebook) could be a good way to get people to buy your game for their iOS device. Young people spend a ridiculous amount of time on facebook. I'm sure way more time than playing their iPhone or iTouch. But if they like your game on facebook and they have an iTouch with no wifi spot they may decide to buy your app so they can play it when they are supposed to be doing their school work!

I reckon that's just from sheer load to the site, they only just launched officially yesterday and I'm certain they saw a high spike in server load on their website as a result.
UPDATE: Ok so I just downloaded the stencyl software about an hour ago...
First impressions: Its good, very good. The software itself its quite simple to use, with crash course things at the beginning. I skipped them and played around with the pre-installed template examples. Included are a Maze Game, Run & Shooter, Ball Bounce game and a few others. Plus you can connect and download many more from the community.
The loading times are great and considering this is flash .swf and the system has yet to crash on my old windows laptop. Hmm, I'm very impressed so far. There are plenty of short-cuts built in to speed up development. I honestly think you could make a decent simple game in a few days with this.
Again though - its early days. Plus there are A LOT of downsides including:
- Community no way near as good/active yet as here on GS ;-) - Lack of Good Examples/Templates - Features are way behind GS such as - No Game Centre - No In-App Purchasing - No iAds - No info about custom splash screens - No Android publishing - PLUS there is no iOS export option yet nor any pricing info. Sure its supposed to be coming this summer but no confirmed date.
OVERALL: after playing with Stencyl for an hour I would say it does have potential BUT its at least a year or so behind GS's roadmap. Until iOS exporting has been launched (or at least a confirmed release date) then I can't see much point developing with Stencyl unless you just want to make your own flash games for a website or own pleasure... review/
Their site is sufficient as far as load times go. What was impressive was that about 140+ guests were on the site when I signed up! It is amazing how "Scratch" is catching on. There is even a book in Chapters (large Canadian book seller) on how to build Android apps with the same technique.
I wish this day had 48 hours ... I will seriously explore this new toy today
I think the way they have the publishing model is pretty good right now. Since flash games have such a HUGE market, you can publish your game to Kongregate or NewGrounds and once the iOS publishing comes out you already have a huge audience that might want to buy your game. Definitely going to try this.
I've taken a close look at Stencyl and it is pretty interesting. At the same time, we're planning some major renovations to our web publishing solution that should be included with our June release.

Basically anything I publish out of GS crashes and I've yet to hear of a solution.
And being free does not make it infallible.

Shadows Peak is an atmospheric psychological horror that explores the dark side of a player.
Maybe I shouldn't of spent that $500 so soon hahaha. Looks like GS will have to pick it up a notch.
I also kina don't like it cause it does mean more competition... I hate all you guys, quit while you can =D jks.

Hey, I wonder how Adobe feels about this?
Hopefully it does because I would rather use game Salad.
