How is this name and logo concept?

Hello,
It's my turn to ask about my company name and logo. I kind of like "Pixel Dust Workshop". How's that? I spent over 2 hours pondering ideas for a name with little luck. More ideas are great. But here's a concept of my logo:
image
Give me a break. It was done entirely on the iPad in Intaglio Sketchpad and published on my iPad too. It was an experiment. The dust will look much more like dust and I'll have a pro make it. So, is it any good at all? LMK and also I accept other name ideas.
Thanks a lot!

I like the idea of Pixel Dust as a name for a company that builds digital games. 'Pixel Dust Workshop' is too many syllables, a mouthful. I know it's exciting to think of a company name and logo, but in my opinion, it's the least important aspect of Game Design. People really don't pay attention to your company's name and logo until your game goes really big and they think to themselves, "Wow, I really like Barrel Roll… I wonder what other games the company makes?"

The visual of blocks doesn't really say "pixels" to me. I'd think you'd want darker dots that are fading/falling/dissolving to lighter dots. But I'm not a graphic artist so other folks will have much better ideas than me!

I like the Pixel Dust name (no workshop). Looks like the logo needs a little more work though. Keep it up! I think you are onto something good.

Might be worth noting that there are already a number of concerns out there with the name 'Pixel Dust', including a games company.

I'm going to be very honest with you:

The designs here are flawed at a basic level, and I am going jump to the conclusion after seeing 3 different designs that you don't have prior training in logo design concept or execution.

You said that you were planning on having a pro remake it. Here is something you can do that will likely have an end result better than you imagined possible. Get a pencil and paper and draw out some very BASIC ideas that you have for the logo, and WRITE out the details you would like next to your drawings. For example: "a color gradient in the background from green to blue"

Then scan the drawings you did and get in contact with a professional designer and DISCUSS with him/her your ideas and ask what their opinion is on your ideas.

The reason you should hire a designer is to allow them to put some of their own voice in the work, otherwise the end result is going to suffer. I understand that this release of some control can be difficult, but this is where the discussion you had before the work was done comes into play. Remember that the use of a pro in any situation is to make your end result better. Find a designer you trust and that has a portfolio you enjoy and let them fill in the details.

If you spend 2 hours drawing 20 basic logo ideas, it will end up being far more valuable than a single fleshed out idea.

Best of luck! Keep up the hard work!

your logo should be a cart in front of a horse :) like tat said, spend your time making a awesome game when its all done then worry with a logo, during the dev cycle a meaningful name may pop into your head

@LaurenSalad - Like @Quire said, there are many names that are pixel dust already. I chose to add workshop to the end of it so it's not an already taken name.
    Thanks!
Why would you want to do that. First off if someone searches for you there gonna get a bunch of different things with that, not just you is gonna come up.

Second off just cause you threw workshop at the end doesnt mean your okay.

Try making rovio workshop or activision workshop and see what happens.

When I think of a logo, I think of Apple's logo. I think simplicity. Your "logos" are the exact opposite of simple, and I don't think it suits the name "logo".

I think that sketching ideas on paper would bring out the simplicity of your ideas much better, and would be more beneficial to you.

try googling "good logo design", you should spend some time studying color design and what constitutes a good effective logo, the ones above are too detailed with different art styles and clashing colors.

a good logo is one you can look at and instantly recognize the brand. Apple, Best Buy, Target, Amazon.com, all of these you can see the logo without the words and know exactly the company.

My 2 cents as a professional designer

You seem to focus a lot on background stuff/other stuff rather than the actual logo font. This is a mistake

Think about the big brand logos for a minute, most of them are very simplistic but at the same time very recognizable. This is what you should shoot for

Focus all your effort into making the logo font. Try ideas and don't be afraid to dump them. A common design motto is kill your darlings meaning if an idea isn't going the way you envisioned it or it simply doesn't work don't be afraid to throw it away and start over

If it was me i'd take the pixel font from the 3rd example and work with that. I really like what you did with it and it fits the word perfectly. As for the dust part you don't HAVE to make the word dust in dust, you can incorporate dust somewhere else like in the fill or the background

My 2 cents for what it's worth:)

The simple one above is EASILY your best attempt yet. Great work on that one as long as your inspiration isn't too literal. Audazzle is better than anything with the word workshop in it IMO. You should take these for now and go build an awesome game! :) good luck.

Alright. I don't know about this idea, but I gave my company name and logo another go. I decided to try the name Pixel Paint Workshop (I changed it because I didn't know how to reflect pixel dust in a logo. If you could five me ideas on how to do that, that would be great). As for the logo, how about this shot at it:
    my_logo
Please let me know what you think, or if you have some other ideas or concepts.
    Thanks a lot!

@iScent - Thanks for replying. How come the first one is better. I do agree that the name is better, but I changed because I couldn't figure out how to reflect the name in a logo.

@LaurenSalad - Like @Quire said, there are many names that are pixel dust already. I chose to add workshop to the end of it so it's not an already taken name. I'm open to any other ideas of how to avoid this problem. Thanks for the feedback. I'll get back to work with the Pixel Dust idea again.
    Thanks!

Wow. I think I spent 2x longer on this logo then the last two combined, but still, it's not perfect.
    my_logo

So this is my full detailed version. My silhouette version will be the scattered pixels in the background. As for the workshop part, I can't think of any other name that's not taken besides Pixel Dust Development, but I think that's even worse. Please tell me what you do and don't like about this logo, because I really need to get this thing done.
    Thanks a lot!
P.S. @LaurenSalad - I'm getting a little tired of uploading my images to my website. I noticed that you used a Vanilla plugin to upload that image in this thread: http://forums.gamesalad.com/discussion/44584/meetup-with-gamesalad#latest
If you could make that plugin public to all member, I think we all would benefit. Thanks a lot!

@tshirtbooth - It's not just you. It's the first post. I posted an SVG, so your computer is loading a slightly large file. If you could edit it and just put the link, that would speed up the page and be great. Thanks a lot.

@entersimon - I like it when people are up front honest with me. I have sketched out this stuff, but a lot of the sketches I can't reflect easily in a logo, or it just boring. I would hire a pro graphic artist, but the one reason is that I'm having trouble even affording the pro version of GS. I would start a Kick starter, but I'm not of legal age. Thanks for you opinion, and I will probably follow that.
@rhinokey - Totally agree. I just had a heck of a lot of time on my hands recently, so I gave my logo a try.
@JohnPapiomitis - Good point. I'm going for a new name. How about Audaz Games (Bold Games) (http://translate.google.com/?client=safari&rls=en&q=mítico+games&oe=UTF-8&um=1&ie=UTF-8&hl=en&sa=N&tab=wT#auto|es|audaz)? I really don't know. Any ideas would be wonderful.
    Thanks a lot!

Alright. I just took the SVG off my website to speed up the loading time because no admin will take it of. If you want to see it, find it here: http://www.flurry.name/zoyt/gamesalad/downloads/misc/logov001.svg
    But here's my new idea:
    some_text

I think this one could be the one. The company name is Audaz Games (Bold Games in english). The A is supposed to be bold. Please tell me what you think!
    Thanks a lot!

How about Audazzle (no "Games", just Audazzle)? @goliath like the first one

@tatiang - I like that much more. Thanks.
@goliath - Thanks! That looks pretty cool, and I would probably use that if I was still using that name. JohnPapiomitis made a very good point, so I don't think I will. Thanks so much. I'm always open to other ideas for this name. But what do you guys think of my new logo idea?
    Thanks a lot!

It's a good idea to work with

A few thoughts just of the top of my head

I'd make the A more curvy to match the form of the controller

Also, make sure the details don't get lost when you scale it down

  • jonmulcahyjonmulcahy Member, Sous Chef Posts: 10,408
Unless you are designing games that use the controller, don't put it in your logo, it should be relevant to what you do.

    Target is a target
Best buy is a price tag
    Apple is an apple
  • rhinokeyrhinokey Member Posts: 158
there may also be legal issues with using an actual established controller design.

    Logo:

    Normal Logo:
    ComplexLogo
    Please LMK what you think.
    Thanks!

Thanks guys. And do you guys like my more complex logo not as my common logo, but to use here and there when there is a large space to fill or something like that? INS. Thanks a lot!
  • EatingMyHatEatingMyHat Member Posts: 1,246
don't feel the complex one, too much stuff going on... phone, buttons, splash.

Simple one is good but a bit boring, feels like a corporate and not a fun company.
