you can't publish with new resolution yet. you can start designing in the new resolution, while keepin in mind of the backward compatibility of smaller resolution. and just wait until GS updates it's software to update your game.

Thanks for the response Ultima. So if I continue to develop my new game for the iPhone5
resolution I will be unable to publish it until GameSalad updates it's software?

If this is true then I could be waiting quite some time before releasing my game. I really would like to be able to develop for the new iPhone as soon as possible.

What are your thoughts. Also how long do you think that it will take for GameSalad to update it's software in order to publish in the new aspect ratio for the iPhone?

Does anyone think that GameSalad was caught off guard by the new iPhone's aspect
    ratio?

hum. i shall remain silent for that one =) i think you know the answer.it'll take however long it needs to take. haha.. from my experience, taking advantage of new features doesn't always translate to more sales.. it's how well you articulate your game that does.. so i'd say to not even worry about the limitations and just design as you intended and by the time you finish working on the design(assets) and the levels.. the updates should be there.. I've had my share of waiting for new release and structuring my own roadmap based on that. but i've find that it's more reliable to play with the chess pieces that you can control.

Good advice! I will just design my game for the iPhone4s as well as work on a separate game project with the iPhone 5 in mind. This way once I finnish my game designed for the older iPhones I can simply publish the same game project for the iPhone 5 when GameSalad updates. Truthfully it is double the work but it will be worth it! Thanks Ultima!

Oh oh oh.. never really thought it would b dis way, its the i5 i saw a month back. the rumors were true.. i guess i saw this 5 with every other mac fanatic blogger .. nearly a month before. Considering apple rumors are rarely true. When it comes to apple, i don't like being smarter than them...a sign of changing times?! don't know...

i guess they should've branded it otherwise.. and not the new iPhone.. and u would've seen crowds drooling all over again.. its what every other company does.. change the screen size, change the name.

Perhaps some advertisement space on both side to match the 1136 :P
Wouldn't that suck while playing... Constant advertisement!

My friend (real iOS programmer) is making an RTS game (where scene is much bigger than the device screen size), and he said that the scene is just cropped (so there are no black bars). Hope that you understand what I'm talking about.

It will be good if anyone can confirm this.

In my opinion, I think everyone needs to slow down for a second. This was just barely announced and you're asking for all these answers that nobody has yet. Obviously GameSalad is aware of the change, and will announce what they're plans are on the forums when they've had time to figure it out. And Apple will probably reveal more details about the change of resolutions and how they will function backwards and forwards, and if they don't then you can wait 2 weeks for the iPhone 5 to release and then see for yourself. You can't expect solutions after one day.

Great insight Wingnology! In fact I am moving along with the game that I am currently developing. At least I will have a version of my game that covers the old iPhones. When GameSalad announces their solution I will simply modify my new game that I am developing now. The only changes that I will be able to make will be to the image size and position and a few numbers in regards to event triggers in my game. If you truly stop and think about it for a moment Apple changing the aspect ratio on the iPhone isn't really that bad. Truthfully I have been testing out the new screen dimensions in GameSalad and I must admit I love the extra space! In sum theres more room for things such as user controls, menu systems etc...

Key Note address on you tube. iPhone 5 watch the video at the (18 minute mark apple shows a letter box app with the old aspect ratio) You can barely notice that it is letter boxed! Also Apple mentions that old apps will run at the same size on older iPhones.
(There is no stretching of apps!)

Currently I am developing a game with a screen size of 960w and 640h this way I can minimize the letter boxing and thus keep my game looking great on the new iPhone5 until GameSalad release a software update. So you see guys theres not much to worry about just keep making great games with GameSalad!

Im just thinking if you are working on a project now... make the scene size the size of the new iphone 5 and the viewable area the size of the current iphone 4. That way when it comes time for GS to update it will just be a matter of moving the UI and controls around.

If you press show contents on the GS .gameproj file and change the info within the .txt's it should convert it seamlessly except for having to change the resolution of your own graphics, :) - Job Sorted

could have saved a lot of time and effort for everyone if apple just made the res higher to 1280x720 with a wider iphone 5. nonetheless waiting for gs update..

It's super easy (but not sure if this will work after publishing):
Rule if attribute (Devices/Screen/Size/Width or Height (depends on your game orientation)) is 480 (old iPhone):
Here put rules to change scene size, actor's positions, graphics, etc.

    And second rule:
Rule if attribute (Devices/Screen/Size/Width or Height (depends on your game orientation)) is 568 (iPhone 5):
Here put rules to change scene size, actor's positions, graphics, etc.
Sorry to burst your bubble, but this method does not work on the iPhone 5. All it will do is make your game look stretched out. I tested this on the new iOS Simulator using the GS viewer. This would be a great strategy for when we can actually fit our games to the size, but for now it will only make things worse.

Because it doesn't work, you really shouldn't change all your scene sizes to 568 to make your game compatible with the iPhone 5. For all we know, GameSalad's fix to this problem could be the same way they make our games compatible with all android devices, stretching and squeezing them. They probably will end up doing that because they already have the system in place for android and all they have to do is change it a little to support iOS.

Hey Accelerated Games what an insightful comment! Also I have checked out your website. I give you games 2 Thumbs up! Lastly, I really hope GameSalad uses the squeeze and stretch method because we could then make our games at 960X640 thus minimizing the stretch effect on the new iPhone5. Additionally 960X640 fits perfectly on the old iPhone4s! I hope GameSalad reads your post. Thanks again for the insightful comment! :))

if only GS created some automatic resizing system. its only half an inch so thats 0.25 inches on each side. should't be that hard.

    +1 @wingnology

I'm not sure what the rush is here? Why on earth would you change you games I progress. Just keep on going at 960x480 and finish up what your on. By the time you get that done you will be in good shape to start at this new res and there will have been plenty trial and error stuff by others you will have the opportunity to learn from.

The old res will still look great on the new iPhone.

    Cheers

I believe to add support for the new resolution all you should need to do is make sure there is a 640x1136 splash screen and I believe you can modify the .app file to add this.
  • robertkdalerobertkdale USAMember Posts: 912
I agree with your assessment Tenrdrmer. In fact the old 960 X 640 resolution looks great on the new iPhone. For those of you who haven't seen it watch the video that I have posted. At 18 minutes in Apple show an example of what a game looks like using the old resolution on the new iPhone. It looks amazing! Just keep making great games people! :))
