Here are some screenshots from my new adventure game made with GameSalad, The Secret of Grisly Manor!

It's an old-school point and click adventure game, similar to MYST, but with an inventory.

You have to solve a bunch of puzzles to explore deeper into the game

You inherit a spooky old mansion from your great-grandfather. And if you can figure out the secrets of the house, an even greater treasure awaits!

I am very excited about my new game! I am making it my masterpiece. I really hope that it sells well, because I LOVE making these types of adventure games!

Stay tuned!

I dont care what it is... im excited!

I have a feeling you're gonna raise the bar again

If i was to guess i would think along the lines of a hidden object slash Nancy Drew adventure ( i mean that in a good way)
  • firemaplegamesfiremaplegames Member Posts: 3,211
Yes, a first person Nancy Drew/Hardy Boys type story!

I'm not sure when it will be done, I just started on it last week. But the engine is complete, I am just working on all the artwork/animations.

That looks awesome FMG - I've wanted to make one of these myself (made a couple of short 'interactive fiction' games on PC a couple of years ago) and think that the iphone/iPad would be a great home for this kind of game!

You're certainly going to set the bar I can see! Will look beautiful on an iPad I'm sure :)

What devices are you aiming for?

    QS :D

    Thanks!

I am actually targeting the iPhone/iPod Touch for this at first.

I always try to target the least common denominator. I don't like to make a game that works great on the iPad, and then have to strip out features for the iPhone.

If it works on a 3G, it will work on an iPad. Plus, this game does not use physics, so it always runs at a nice 60FPS on my 3GS...

And this is not my driving reason by any means, but personally, sales for the iPhone/Touch far outweigh the iPad sales.

Hopefully, we will be able to make Universal apps at some point.

This is very cool. I think we have yet to see this type of game w/ Gamesalad, and it's surprising because it would work great! Looks like you'll be booting up Photoshop a lot in the next couple weeks :)

looks really cool FMG. I have thought too about making a MYST type game but thought the limitations on how many frames of animation would be restrictive. Can't wait to see it!!

I don't think I've closed Photoshop in ten years!

Wow, this looks amazing. I've been waiting for game like this to pop up. How is the narrative delivered? spoken word?

    looks amazing

Right now it is pop-up text. You can tap on most things to either interact with it, or to get a brief description of it.

I will most likely have some voiceover work for the intro story.

looks great..what kind of licence do you have on the house?
  • firemaplegamesfiremaplegames Member Posts: 3,211
@rob: what do you mean by license?
    I painted those in photoshop.

    OMG! That's awesome.
I'm hanging to play it already.
What price bracket are you planning for? That artwork is super professional.

You have so inspired me to do a "Maniac Mansion" remake!

Ive seen the house before...in a few places!!
  • firemaplegamesfiremaplegames Member Posts: 3,211
Yeah, its based off of the carter mansion in california. A very famous victorian mansion.

    @fmg

Did you ever get into the kings series?

When you mentioned old school point and click just the phrase alone took me back

@fmg I'm not trying to belittle your achievement, just understand your technique, the first image is a reworking of a photo ...

That is one game I will buy! Looks fantastic! I LOVE adventure games! Broken Sword, Myst, Monkey Island... pretty much all of em ;)

Wait, so you're simply painting all of these in photoshop? How many different images do you anticipate having to make? Seems like that would take ages!

Looks awesome, though. Wish you the best of luck!

Some guys are just super proficient at PS. The BG artist for my feature film was incredible. I'd give him a description of what I wanted and nine times out of ten I'd have a perfect image emailed to me within a couple of hours. I wish I had that kind of talent!

Well done, Firemaple... it does look stunning!
  • EastboundEastbound Member, BASIC Posts: 1,074
I suppose with "never closing photoshop in 10 years" one would have that sort of proficiency. I just can't imagine getting to that point :p
  • firemaplegamesfiremaplegames Member Posts: 3,211
@Rob2: Yeah, I use sort of a digital painting technique. It's a mix of photographs and hand painting to build up the image. Plus different layering effects. Here's a link to the Carter mansion image I used: http://www.bigstockphoto.com/image-1151535/stock-photo-carter-mansion

Unfortunately it is used a lot in making haunted houses. It's just so darn perfect for it though!

@Eastbound: I anticipate about 40-50 images (which include a bunch of close-ups of different scenes and objects).

Each of those took me a few hours. Plus they are animated. Lightning crashes and animated shadows, etc..

But it is a lot of fun!

Then what's the point of saying it.

Well he was stating that they aren't all hand painted from scratch. I was under the impression that these were all drawn from scratch with basically the paintbrush tool, so I'm glad rob and fmg clarified.

The end result is still impressive, nonetheless.

@firemaplegames So, I'm working through your brilliant platformer tutorials and learning a LOT. So glad you cleared up attributes for this total noob. I'm up to the ducking part but when oh when are you going to release the jumping tute? I look forward to that!

Cheers! And sorry to change the subject... I have ADH... ooh... a butterfly...
  • firemaplegamesfiremaplegames Member Posts: 3,211
Thanks. I USED to have jumping working in my platformer 'sneak peek'.
    But 0.86 totally broke it.

Jumping is the biggest pain in the ass. It works 98% of the time...
I spent a straight week trying to get it to work properly.

I will try to tackle it again once I get some time!
  • AfterBurnettAfterBurnett Member Posts: 3,474
LOL okay, thanks :) I need jumping for my fighting game. I actually have the characters jumping PERFECTLY but I can't work out how to stop them building momentum when on the ground as they run so fast with the accelerate rule... I tried limiting max speed etc but that just stuffs the jumping....AAAARGH!!!!
