I think GS is thinking promotion, be inclusive and have fun as regards to the contest rules and prizes.

Everyone can get involved and excited.

  • sebmat86sebmat86 Member Posts: 339

Yeah, @gattoman, I thought about that. But I think they then should have made another kind of "competition". But you might be right.

@dgackey‌ There's less than a week to go, and a few points that need clarifying I think!

And if that wasn't scary enough, Happy Halloween :D

The Official Rules say entries must be submitted by November 20th. Which is correct? I have a super long weekend coming up the 8th-11th. Will I be able to submit eligible games at that time?

@Moik, Seems to me like they extended the contest period till the 20th.

    After re-reading all @dgackey's posts with a fine-toothed comb, I think I'm understanding:

    • This is the first of two competitions (confirmed in a post earlier).
    • The second one is probably going to begin right on the heels of this one, and run from the 7th to 20th (speculation on my part).
    • Both competitions likely use the same prize pool (speculation on my part).

Well, the bigger prizes are chosen by random, so unfortunately this is not the case.

While not being sure what the purpose the different devs have for uploading their games to arcade, I felt the need to make a post here and "lift" up (IMO) the better games from the less great games like all the "test games" and unfinished demos... Why someone would upload tests and unplayable games to arcade, beats me. I guess the sea of "not-so-great-games" is partially because of this contest.

Well anyways, here are a few gems I found you should look up:

    Cosmic Charge

I´m not sure about the ships particle effects, though I do get the pixel art idea...
    Otherwise pretty fun!
    http://arcade.gamesalad.com/games/125638

    Cookiemons

Might get a bit, at least for me, repetitive in the long run, but I had a great time whilst playing this gem.
    http://arcade.gamesalad.com/games/125648

    Save the Bacon

Say whatever you will. Despite the graphics, this was actually fun.
    http://arcade.gamesalad.com/games/125645

    Ninja Man

Somehow this game feels a bit "all over the place" and not structured. But seriously, the potential this game has! Great character animations and fluid gameplay!
    http://arcade.gamesalad.com/games/125583

    Fly! Penguin!

Not so much for the gameplay, though it was alright, but the graphics are really nice. Has an overall quality feel to it!
    http://arcade.gamesalad.com/games/125576

    Fat Cat Bounce

Got to say that this really made me laugh. Fun idea. Liked the graphics and the simple gameplay. Not sure about the replay value. But who cares, there are bouncing cats and a hat!
    http://arcade.gamesalad.com/games/125575

    Attack of the Cuteness

Cool graphics. I hope the gameplay gets more "fun" to it. But yeah. The graphics are cool.
    http://arcade.gamesalad.com/games/125580

Drop in The Cup - Red

This is one of, like 5 different versions of the game uploaded to arcade. The only difference between the versions are the color of the game, which almost made me not want to write about the it here. But I fell for the awesome graphics and good gameplay, so I just had to. I hope the developer will implement the different colors in the same game instead.
    http://arcade.gamesalad.com/games/125549

    Zihilos

Point and click games have a special place in my heart. Always will have. This one really feels lika a demo, which it obviously is. But something with it really sticks out. Don´t know what. I really see great potential here, that´s for sure. Hmm.
    http://arcade.gamesalad.com/games/125540

    Doodel Spikes Panic!

    Cool graphics. Fun gameplay.
    http://arcade.gamesalad.com/games/125533

    Marble Ball n Buckets

    Same as above!
    http://arcade.gamesalad.com/games/125445

    aBaBBa

Not so much for the gameplay. Its alright, but I liked the layout and the over all feel of the game. Cool!
    http://arcade.gamesalad.com/games/125447

    Gull Juan

Now this one, folks, this one is THE one! Oh! It might need some changes here and there. I think... But the idea and the humor in this game really struck me!
    http://arcade.gamesalad.com/games/125422

    LIGHTS

Yes, you guessed it. You´re right. You knew it. Of course, the list would´t be complete without promoting my own game! Its called LIGHTS and is a "Soon to be released" iPhone game now available on Arcade. Not saying its the best game, but Im saying it anyway. It rocks!

After seeing all the posts, I'm glad I never bother with these promotions. The quality of the arcade is lacking. The issue with sounds is with HTML 5 the files need to be WAV but even then it's spotty. Heck you can produce a full screen HTML 5 version using the Tizen SDK. I don't get Gs's fixation with the arcade. It's a total waste of resources.

For the purpose of promotions, it's probably easiest to process judging that way. For the long play, they could want to turn the arcade into an actual IAP-based portal like Kongregate. It needs content to bring players and have the form a habit of visiting.*

*This is not an endorsement of quantity-based promotions.**

Since we're submitting the games to Arcade first, and they're being moved over to Amazon by GameSalad, presumably, I assume there is no point putting ads or IAP in our games? Amazon may support IAP but GS Arcade doesn't?

Took a few days on and off to develop a new game for this game jam, but after uploading it to the GS Arcade it runs incredibly SLOW and laggy. It runs fine on preview and on my devices, but it's basically unplayable on GS Arcade. Is there some issue or bug that I'm unaware of? I've searched the forums but haven't found any resolution. I've developed and published several Apple and Android apps that run great, but this is my first time putting something on the GS Arcade....

seems to run fine on my work machine, chrome on win7. the particles are moving smoothly and everything seems responsive. although when you die it's wrapping the word 'seconds' to the next line, so it shows up behind the rest of the test

I think it's the particles taxing the render speed. If you can reduce the number of particles, it should run better. Also if possible, avoid having the particles rotate or change size.

@jonmulcahy thank you for checking it out for me. Glad to hear its performing well elsewhere. I tried Chrome and it ran slightly better than it did on Safari and Firefox for me, but still way too slow.

@pHghost thanks for checking out my game, or viewing my PowerPoint I guess, haha. Yea I've had my Macbook Pro since 2009. I upgraded the memory a few years ago. It still runs great for everything I do, except play my game on the GS Arcade, haha. I just played your game....it's hard. I finally got the hang of it and passed 6 gates. Your game ran totally fine for me though. Nice graphics.

@TaoOfSalad thanks for the input. The game has a lot of particles that change size, and some have random rotation. I'll try scaling it back some.

Thanks @Malkovich. I'm not very familiar with games on HTML5 so I'm not sure what the exact problems are.

I did some trail & error with removing different aspects of the particles but nothing helped much so I decided to remove all particles, and the random ship movements :\ . The game runs better on the Arcade now, but it still doesn't run like it normally does, and the seconds show up differently. It doesn't look as neat now IMO, but at least it's playable :| .

I'll release the normal version on Apple and Amazon with their respective leaderboards sometime soon.

My submission. I only had a day to make it so it's pretty bare-bones, but I've had some fun playing it. It plays beautifully smoothly even on an iPad 1, but it really doesn't seem as happy in Arcade. There's nothing overly complex going on so that's unfortunate.

@PureEpicStudios‌ nice idea and all, but noticed a bug when playing.
if you die and try to play again, shooting no longer works, making the game unplayable after the first death.

Sorry for any confusion folks, up to my ears in insurance, benefits and year-end fun, but wanted to address a couple of issues that were mentioned earlier.

-- Are there 2 prize pools or just one?

DM: Two! We'll award prizes for each jam separately.

-- When does the first jam end? Time zone, etc.

DM: That one was asked last night on the Meetup but it's in the Official Rules. 11:59PM EST tomorrow, Thursday, November 6th.

-- When will the second jam begin?

DM: We'll announce the theme on Monday the 10th and start taking entries then. The end date will be Tuesday the 24th at 11:59PM EST.

-- Why are we letting people submit existing games during this game jam?

DM: Amazon approached us about getting some great HTML5 content into their ecosystem and we wanted to show how much awesome stuff GameSalad developers have made for the Arcade as well as encourage new content. Everyone loved the Tizen free month promotion so much, we thought this would be an even easier way to offer some free months.

-- Okay, I get that, but it tilts the scales more heavily in favor of those who have a lot of old Arcade games they can republish rather than those who have made games just for this jam!

DM: That was an oversight on our part and what we probably should have said is that every entry earns you a free month, but you can only earn a single entry into the sweepstakes drawing no matter how many entries you make. We'll correct this for the 2nd jam :)

But for this jam each game still equals a new entry in the sweepstakes?
