I've been using GS since last june (over a year ago) and there are often bugs with new updates, but they usually get fixed within a day or two. I would be shocked if this next update would completely "break" the project you are currently working on. I would recommend you keep plugging away at it.
Okay, I'll keep working on the "spawning" version of my game. Basically I can do it two ways, spawn the "enemies" or shift around instances of them. I have two projects, the spawning version is much easier to work with and I'm confident that with these performance upgrades the game will run fine (currently it slows to a crawl after a couple of minutes play, even though memory is only reading 14MB). If not, I can always go back to the instances method (which is doing my head in).

I would 'guess' that it'll be end of the first week in September from what Yoda mentioned (read his post again - towards the end - he mentions that moderator stuff is coming *as well* in 'the next two weeks).
I'm very excited to try the new version of GS out. Along with already planned optimisations, the increased performance stuff will help put Kraken onto older devices with any luck! Awesome!

And Pause... my god, FINALLY
QS
Thanks for the guess. I've been checking the forum, like every minute.
I know, pause is FINALLY implemented into GS. I'm excited to be using GS just because of pause. I wonder what the new scenegraph is. Maybe a redesigned Interface Designer?
POLYGAMe said: How cool will it be to be able to open your existing games, build with the new version and have an instant performance increase? WOOHOO!
Yep, but it all depends on how you've built it. If you're already using a lot of resources and a lot of unoptimised rules and stuff, the increase won't be as great as you'd hoped!
It shouldn't be an excuse for lazy implementation! But hey, it all helps, right
No, all pretty well optimised but I would rather spawn the enemies (and bullets, by the way) than have to mess around with resetting positions. Pretty much impossible to do a shooter without spawning bullets.
You know what I would LOVE for them to add in this next update, would solve a tonne of headaches for me, add like a check box to make an actor non-applicable to gravity, that's it. That simple, just check it off under the actor properties and BAM! actor not affected by scene gravity, and I don't mean the "movable" option, have it so the actor can still move.
Hey y'all, I thought of moving into CORONA (as a programmer I don't mind scripting, but I do love drag & drop GUI).
I've read over at ansca that several gs devs are transitioning and porting their games over.
Next week, they'll increase the price to $249...right now you can get it for $99 and students for $49.
My gripe on GS 'big picture', is that it doesn't say when features are coming (or estimates).
I started picking up basic things with "game edition" (still a HUGE learning curve). Right now with them, you're able to do "open feint, facebook, Twitter, leaderboards, etc.
I still haven't bought their subscription, but would like to know what y'all think...should I?
Corona is expecting (not promising) to introduce a GUI by the time it reaches 1.0 (right now is alpha).
As for this "update", PAUSE is a great addition (back again), but when is the rest coming? And will it be for all and not just Pro?...I only have a couple of months for my express to expire and I haven't recup my investment.
Personally, I would go with what environment you enjoy the most - the environment that allows you have the most fun as a game creator.
I think that will reflect in your games.
There are certainly more powerful development environments than GameSalad, but you need to be able to utilize that power. Xcode might be more flexible and allow greater access to the lower levels of the device, but that doesn't mean anything if you are a lousy Objective-C programmer.
You really have to love what you do! I have been totally enjoying myself with GameSalad these past couple of months. I wake up excited to work on my game, and I can sit here for 12 hours straight working on it.
I feel the same way with Flash.
However, I cannot stand working in Xcode. I do not like it. It is not fun for me. You have a folder full of .png images, and a folder full of text files. It is just too disjointed for me. The code is separate from the artwork. And all the animation and the subtlety of the game is all in the code, which seems backwards to me.
I am an artist first, and a programmer second. I love to work on both equally. I have Photoshop and GameSalad open at the same time, and I am constantly swapping in and out images and reworking the code. They are not separate endeavors to me.
Trust me, I am WELL aware of GameSalad's shortcomings, but I still love it despite them.
All of the SDKs have their strengths and their weaknesses. I recommend trying them all.
The ones I know about are:
Xcode Xcode with the cocos2D game libraries Corona Shiva3D Unity iTorque GameSalad
And that list is roughly in order of "ease of use" to "power". Although I would argue that ease of use IS power.
Thanks FMG, totally agree with you. I do LOVE GS, and have the same feeling you're talking about when working with it. However, it seems like is always guessing with Gendai and not knowing is frustrating.
My games, by no means are great, but people who have played them have complained about the lack of leaderboard or social media integration.
I hate Xcode and objective c code...but corona code is like JavaScript or action script...very easy to call and instantiate objects to appear and sprite animation is great with "game edition"...download the free alpha and you'll see.
I'm just upset cuz I know I could do more and get more for le$$ money...but like you said "it won't bee to fun as a game creator."
I really hope Gendai comes thru for All of us and not just Pro.
