Tris said: I've been developing iPhone apps for over a year, and while I'm a complete GS noob - I know my way around the AppStore and have experience with AdMob.
I guess the main points that seem to be missed in this thread are:
Ads are used to generate revenue from free games. That is, games that are made to be free. It is rare for an experienced iPhone developer to go out with a goal of making lots of money from ads. Free applications are marketing tools - their sole purpose is (or should be) to encourage someone to spend money on a full version. In this regard, iAds play a much more important role than making money (though that is nice) - they annoy people.
People hate ads, and if they really enjoy a game, will be willing to pay to remove them. And if they don't like the game enough to pay for it, then there is a high chance that they would not have paid for it in the first place - so the 5 cents you got from them is brilliant.
So my advice is yes, embrace iAds - but think smart about it. If you have a game out there with say, 50 levels, it would be very beneficial to release a free, iAd supported version with 10 levels.
Of course, the downside is that without a pro GS, you can't link to the paid version. This is why it costs so much more, I suspect.
End rant, hope that adds to the topic
Couldn't agree more with you actually. Good advice!
Sometime ago, in Australia, an advert was running on late night TV for some mobile phone sex game. It used footage of The Sims 2.
I took the time to contact EA, who messed me around a lot - and was able to let them know that their footage was being used on this ad. It was then confirmed that it was without their consent.
I asked for a copy of Spore. They said no. >:(
I don't get it.... you let them know that there property was being used and then you asked for a free game and they said no...... so you hate them... why again?

Fixed your comment for you.....
I wasn't hating.... it was just a question.......
Considering this is coming from the MASTER of copying games.... and how much you could've got yourself (and Gendai/ GameSalad) in trouble.... You can take heart that I will treat your opinion exactly as it is.... as an OPINION.... Thank you for your time
You know im wondering if GS even has a say about putting iAds into our games. I watched the apple conference thing and payed attention when Steve was talking about iAds. he said all you do is tell apple where to put it and they plug it into your game no special coding or preperation required. So this being said I believe iAds in our game is not even up to the GS crew, rather just agree to apples licencing and tell them where you want it.
I'm sorry but how could my opinion get me into trouble on this? I have every right to hate a company if I so choose - no one can do a thing about it; well, not my stating my opinion. If I were to make up a lie about a company, that would be different.
Anyway - if someone was using footage I from a game I created without my consent to advertise porn/adult content on late night TV, I'd be really grateful if someone took the time to let me know.
They weren't appreciative, (game or not, there was no gratitude there,) and they messed me around for ages while I tried to reach someone to talk to.
Also - what does you copying games have to do with anything? I'm not talking about someone copying a game here - I'm talking about people stealing footage of a family friendly game to advertise porn.... XD

The bit about coping games wasn't aimed at you, but DeadPixel. DeadPixel has a, shall we say, tendency, to copy other games, like a direct copy of Dunk Hunt.
I told Ferrari that their cars were being used left, right and centre in film and television projects without their consent. They wouldn't give me a free Ferrari, so I feel your pain, Peach

I never said you cant hate them... I was just wondering why.....
Lets drop this... my bad...
Sorry!!!
P.S as Koda said the copying games part was aimed at DeadPixelZ
There is absolutely nothing wrong with asking a company for a game when you were of tremendous help to them.
They are a multi-million dollar franchise, I think they could have at least given you the courtesy of a copy of Spore. Why they were so greedy is not a good reflection of them.

Now, we want our iAD!
Seeing as how EA is based in the US, their Australian subsidiary probably doesn't have the power to do that... Just like when you have a problem with something.. you don't see the low level guy.. you see the manager
If the same situation would've happened at Microsoft, or Nintendo, Or Sony... None of them would've given you a free copy of anything....
Or if you saw someone steal a prototype chevy volt and you called GM and told them where they lived.... I guarantee they wouldn't give you a free car.... Neither would any other company....
Or if the same situation Happened at Dell, HP, or Apple they wouldn't have given you anything either....
Its unreasonable to expect anything from giant multimillion dollar global corporations.... Its just not going to happen...
Chosenonestudios: I agree with you on the expectations part, you can never "expect" a company to just give you anything, but I didn't see anything wrong with her asking.
And it probably did have to do with the Aussie Subsidiary, in that they didn't have the power to do that....
butterbean said: Chosenonestudios: I didn't see anything wrong with her asking.
I didn't either.. It was just .. In my opinion.. I didn't feel you could hate anybody or anything for them not giving you something they probably weren't even allowed to do.... But just my opinion... Obviously
Well, since people seem to have trouble staying on topic, I'm going to talk about my lunch.
I made a nice sandwich, turkey, lettuce, swiss and mustard on nice bread (from Costco's bakery department). I like Costco, as they have lots of great food there... at really good prices. And yes, they do give away free samples to Costco members.
Yet, even after such a delicious sandwich, I still feel hungry. Perhaps I need a snack, maybe some chocolate. I could heat up a Pop Tart, but I think I should get back to work. I thought that my sandwich would help to inspire me, with ideas for my next app. So far, nothing. It seems that game ideas generally do not come from sandwiches. Not directly anyway. Perhaps later, when the sandwich has been digested and converted into energy for my brain.

Well, it seems to have drifted from iADS, so I'm making this the sandwich thread.
I think potato salad is a tasty combo for a sandwhich. Yum! That would have been better than chocolate. Oh, or a rice-ball. Those are good. Although, pickles are significantly less calories and that's pretty tasty too.
Costco has great pickles. I didn't get them last time because I picked up a jar of the bean salad... AH HA... that's it! That's what I should eat!

We agree on something!
I didn't see the hate part, so I do agree with that, you can't expect a company to give you stuff, more than likely they won't, & it shouldn't be a reason to hate them... but ....
Anyhoo, I come back to this topic and now we're talking about sandwiches! Woo this has gone way off! )
EA have given me LOADS of free games over the years... helps if you review games for magazines, of course Though they did threaten to stop sending them to me once as my reviews are always very honest. LOL.

They are "light" versions of the non-free apps.
They act as promo apps and I constantly got about $5-10/day from AdMob over the last couple of months.
