Far as I'm concerned, we are the King and Queen of retro!
I buy IAPs mostly on Adventure games (to unlock full games after getting hooked on a level or two).
I've never bought a smurfberry-type IAP, although I must admit I was VERY tempted to buy monster berries in Monster Pet Shop (so darn cute!) The $4.99 put me off, but if there was a package for $1.99, I probably would have.
firemaplegames said: I am curious how much people here spend on In-App-Purchases? Especially the really excited people in this thread?
Just curious. I personally have never bought anything with IAP, nor has anybody that I know.
I can't see myself buying Smurfberries or anything like that. Same with extra outfits for the player.
Buying weapons and powerups seems like a scam.
Buying additional levels or locked content seems like a jerk move, especially with how many other games give you so much content for free. Charging for 75% of the game and making people pay again for the final 25% seems like a terrible idea to me. Why not just charge 1.99$ in the first place if you think your game is worth it. Do you really think people would be fooled by that?
I can understand the LITE/full argument, but I don't usually download LITE versions. I find it just clutters up my phone. I will usually just buy the full version if somebody recommends it.
I know IAP are supposed to be what everybody is spending all this money on, but who are these people? I have never met a single one.
Anyway, I just wanted to know how much each of you have spent on IAP.
For example those free game, Tiny Tower and such many gets so addicted and want to buy extra cash package and such. I admit I have bought those kind of IAP before, but those who are like, remove iAd, unlock levels, clothes is a scam. I agree on that. But a friend of my made a simple but addictive free game. It sold about 300.000 copies on a half year, and sold about 100.000 copies of the extra cash pack with IAP. So free games with cash packs are really succesfull, so this would be a great feature for us developers:)
I am pretty sure that until a threshold of 'real quality' in a game is reached the effect of added facilities like IAP to the numbers sold are close to meaningless, and only a distraction.
In my opinion, in order for iap to make money, your game has to be good enough to make money without it.
And that's what it all comes down to.
Most of the top games do have IAP, but I doubt that's why they are the top. It's probably just a feature in a great game that nobody really uses. I'm also one of the people that has never used IAP, ever.
It's a trend that permeates the entire game market now. I've been a long time subscriber to the MMO called "City of Heroes" and just this last Tuesday, they came out with a huge update/expansion to the game. Lot's of new content, and lots of new costume pieces and sets and auras that make your avatar look really cool. They are adding a "Free to Play" version, and this was the expansion to get ready for that.
Well, outside of all the new playable content they added, all of the new costume pieces, auras, etc. are now purchased with game currency. And you can buy more game currency all you want with real money. And if you are a "free to Play" player, you can buy game content that is only available to the VIP players that still pay the monthly subscription fee.
What was basically a dying game has been re-born, and is doing quite well so far. The player population is sprouting again, people everywhere, and having queue times to log into your server, just like the old days when the game was at it's peak. All this update was really, is implementation of IAP. It looks like it is going to do well for them.
Having said all that, City of Heroes is a great, fantastic, beautiful game. And has hundreds of thousands of subscribers. Their "Free to Play" is the same thing as a lite version, with the option to spend more money to get more content. This model is something i can agree with, but for them to make it so that costumes and auras, which have no effect on the gameplay, are now only available through IAP, and not unlockable in the game by completing certain tasks like they used to be, is just plain shi**y, and that model even applies to the people that have a paid monthly subscription. I even have some "unlockable through tasks" costume pieces that were taken away, and now have to pay with in game money to get it back again. Long story short, I'm canceling my account, because I don't agree with this new greedy business model.
I don't like it. I'm willing to bet nobody here makes any significant money with IAP, and yet, it's the direction all things are moving towards. It's the semi-present, and will be the future of gaming. Money destroys everything.
Virtual currency is a huge business in some bigger PC games.... I forget the name now, but there was one game, sort of like "The Sims" where virtual goods were sold like clothes, cars, even homes.
A few people were making a *living* selling just virtual goods like one gal had a clothing shop, she was making upwards of 60K a year running her virtual shop....
Now for iOS games, virtual currency is limited to coins, smurfberries, and currency, but it will be interesting to see just how far it's taken....
I'm not a fan of virtual goods, but you can see many apps in the top grossing section that utilize it...
ok I join in while gamesalad just had iad(so i did not join the arguments)
now people are saying IAP will be like iad, but you have only got few examples(not saying it is wrong, just not sure if it is correct)
and i think using IAP for something is stupid(such as weapons etc)
but now crack apps are so annoying, if you make your app for(it is the lite version) and made the full version only available for IAP(and yes your game has to be good), people will buy it as they will but it if it is a paid app

I have seen on Youtube tutorials on how to crack IAP stuff using Cydia. So thinking that you can avoid piracy via IAP is a bit of a false hope really.

I hate crack apps, so I do not think people can hack iap yet, so I will just make my game the lite version and have a upgrade to full
i have spent $5 on IAp, it is in docs to go which I love it a lot
and for the rest too, I have no idea what happen

I think when I press send post and it did not respond, so I press it 10 times(because I thought there will be a 30 sec limit, but it did not)
