ah…Adobe doesn’t insist I give them distribution rights for my creations nor charge a percentage on my commercial use of my designs…you are comparing apples to oranges.

sounds more like deteriorating to an oligarchy …

=== IMO we will be working as independent contractors for GameSalad.
Wish GS would decide what it is…. an SDK or a publishing house which has a specific formatted interface to use as their guidelines for submission?
=== personally…I bought a year of Express membership…and think with such drastic changes…and the fact that game quality has to regress with this business paradigm…I should have the option of a refund for the months not used on that subscription…the fact that I can still use the old modus operandi and others can use new free…isn’t valid… as may never submit a GS app to appStore.
=== I can understand Apple’s 30%…would cost me almost that much to process a credit card. ===
I would have rather seen a large price and a new SDK
butterbean said: They're not going to get quality games under the GS logo with this new plan. Big developers who have built a brand will leave.
I personally have an LLC, my own website, and have spent over a year now building my own brand. I'm in no way EVER giving that up to Gamesalad nor anyone for that matter.
Same here. I'll stick with GS until my membership expires (july). Then MMF2 or GameMaker hopefuly has the iPhone exporter ready.

So, how do I pick out a game to buy?
I look on the Top Categories and New & Noteworthy lists. I remember the name of the game. I remember the screenshots. I remember the YouTube videos. I remember the reviews on all the blog sites.
Who do you think is behind all that? The publisher.
I don't think most people are disagreeing with you on that point. The main issue (aside from the initial shock of the big changes ahead) is the rep of GS as a publisher. Why should a dev be "forced" to go with a publisher they have little faith in AS a publisher.
I love GS. It's made it possible for myself and Mark at Flaming Mitten actually get our ideas from our rather technically limited artistic brains onto the IOS devices quicker and easier than anything else out there at the moment.
We may not be coders, but we are not idiots when it comes to business and looking out for our own interests. We are both self employed, as a musician/producer in my case, and as a designer in Mark's case. It like me being FORCED to release a record on a label I didn't have any faith that could sell more records (in this day and age mp3s) than I could by submitting those same records (mps3) to all the sites myself...and I have done this in the past.
I totally agree with you, as a punter, that the publisher of a game is pretty much the bottom of my list when deciding what games to buy. But as a dev, I want the choice.
butterbean said: There's just one problem with this. The company name is Gamesalad, and a very, very poor reputation is tagged with that name.
How can they market our games when their reputation is that poor?
Well, let's be honest. How do you think it got poor?
By releasing a cheap $99 engine to build and publish as much as you want on the App Store for whatever price you deem necessary.
The GameSalad engine can produce quality titles. In my opinion, all of FireMapleGames' titles are quality titles that can stand shoulder to shoulder with many of the titles in a given Top 25 list.
But, some people have squandered or abused that. I can be guilty of that, too. So, when some people see "Made with GameSalad" pop up on the screen, they react with the same disdain as when M. Night Shyamalan's name appears in a movie trailer (See http://popwatch.ew.com/2010/07/19/devil-laughter-m-night-shyamalan/).
They've got to turn that around, that's on them. But, we've got to step it up a notch, and I bet you that GameSalad will have a lot to do with that part of the process in the future, too.
Photics said: Heh, but that's just more waiting. I can't sit around forever, waiting for Gendai Games to come to their senses. Corona and Unity works. It's frustrating to learn new software, but this drama is also frustrating. The difference is that learning new software is a good thing.
True, learning a new software can be a good thing
I have a feeling Gamesalad won't come to their senses on this. I don't think they have a choice. They knew people would react, but went forth with it still.
Game Maker is another great option, as soon as they allow for iphone publishing, I may seek them out.
Well i pop out for an hour to get some shopping in, and when I get back the forum has errupted.
I just read through the announcements, and the posts, and I have to say its not good news.
I said in another thread that I was worried that Gendai/GameSalad were on the verge of shooting themselves in the foot if they didnt turn things around, and get on top of the tool and editor.... with this announcement, theyve gone and done it with a double barrel shotgun!
This is crazy talk.... and if its the way forward, then thats me done for definate. Ive got about 6 months left on my account, but I'll probably just finish off current projects, then go elsewhere.
Theres absolutely no way that I can agree to give up any brand identity Ive been working towards, and no way I can agree to giving up control of my products. This is more than a simple hobby for me.
The community were asking for different things.... and I dont think this new approach really caters to any of those requests.
I personally just wanted them to fix the bloody editor, and add things like snap to grid, multiple cut and paste etc, and then I'd have signed up for pro...even at the $2000. In its current state the editor was just too fiddly and painful for making anything too complicated.
So yup... why couldnt they just concentrate on building the better featured editor, and then be a more appealing prospect to the more serious user, and dev studios?
The new model is simply going to drive the more serious developers away. Most developers wont sign up to this... and I predict that if GameSalad are adamant about going down this road, theyre going to find themselves in trouble within a year.

@Chunky: they are already in a world of financial trouble, which is why they had no choice but to go forth with this plan.
Do I think this new plan will be the final nail in the coffin so to speak?
funny, I was pleased to have 3 of my app icons featured in their magazine advert earlier this week.
Now after this kick in the teeth I would like my copyrighted images removing from your advert. You have no right at all to use them, please withdraw the advert immediately. I don't want to be associated with this.

No thanks. Looks like Unity is in my sights now. Only issue it has is its really a 3d engine when I create 2d games.
Mike
Just an FYI... while it is true that it is geared towards 3D games, there are a fair number of 2D games being made on it. Check out the forums for different strategies for doing so.
Plus, if you ever decide to move on up to 3D games you can use the same toolset.
Its a sad ... sad .... day, today! Im honestly in shock! Absolutely gutted. Why do they wish to take our independance? There's soo many options they could apply around the new scheme. Giving up my identity ... come on! Damn you guys should put up a road map some time very soon, you've strung us along for months not communicating and now you drop this! I can see a lot of people jumping ship, the future is drag and drop coding, GameSalad have a foot up on the rest but it wont be for ever. I absolutely love GameSalad but i just cant see how i can stay on once my subscription expires!
Soo many questions and as ever, so little answers! Why cant Gendai just release a post that states everything and stops all the speculating!
What happens to a game they think isnt good enough? Surely they cant expect people to spend time and money making something and have them turning round saying we dont want it!
What will the percentage be?
I think with such drastic news, they should be a hell of a lot more chatty!

@StusApps ... you are too good to be in the GS dumpSter!
you didn't hear this from Mother...but...
think GS's new business plan is sort a "pimp model"...we turn the tricks and they wanta collect on our back-breaking work... and also, our wares have to be displayed in their "house"
I for one would like to know where the idea of GS taking a percentage of profits comes from? I read the GS Blog on the front page and didnt see any hint towards taking a percentage, but I did catch this.
"Under the new model, there is no subscription, and no fees until creators choose to publish their games."
To me this sounds like we are to pay a rate for each game we decide to produce. If this is how GS is going then I think its not that bad a decision. This will stop the flood of poor quality games trying to make a quick buck. Perhaps $99 a game would be a more reasonable way for GS to generate their money and it sure as hell would make me put a lot more time into my games to make sure they received some what of a return.
Any thoughts on this I would still like to see where the idea of them taking a % came from a link would be nice

No way am I accepting gamesalad taking more money off me. Apple are taking enough with there 30%.
Unless we see a compromise I am waving bye bye to Gamesalad.
This news is such a shame
